This glossary is being made for the student in Pre-hospital Emergency Care and for the active paramedic. His goal is to help in the translation of field related terms and to help English speaker patients.

An excessively acid condition of the body fluids or tissues.
Example: The pH level of 7.130 indicates an ACIDOSIS.

A vehicle specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital.
Example: The patient was brought into hospital by AMBULANCE six weeks ago, following a fall in the street.

asystole
noun
A condition in which the heart no longer beats and usually cannot be restarted .
Example: The monitor indicates an ASYSTOLE.

backboard
noun
a board used to support or straighten a person's back, especially after an accident.
Example: He's being put on a BACKBOARD to prevent spinal injuries

An airway apparatus used to cover the patient’s nose and mouth and begin ventilating the lungs mechanically by squeezing a reservoir of oxygen or air .
Example: He's being ventilated by a BAG-VALVE MASK.

bradypnea

An abnormally slow breathing rate . The rate at which bradypnea is diagnosed depends upon the age of the patient .
Example: He's breathing to slow, he's in BRADYPNEA.

cardiopulmonary resuscitation

a medical procedure involving repeated compression of a patient's chest, performed in an attempt to restore the blood circulation and breathing of a person who has suffered cardiac arrest.
Example: He doesn't have pulse, we have to do CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION.

A blind insertion airway device used in the pre-hospital and emergency setting . It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distress .
Example: To make him breath, we need to insert a COMBITUBE in his airway.

hyperglycemia
noun
an excess of glucose in the bloodstream, often associated with diabetes mellitus.
Example: For instance, if blood glucose is inadequately controlled, HYPERGLYCEMIA or glycosuria may result.

excessive constriction of the pupil of the eye.
Example: His pupil is MIOSIS.

dilation of the pupil of the eye.

nitroglycerin
noun
an explosive yellow liquid made by nitrating glycerol, used in explosives such as dynamite. It is also used in medicine as a vasodilator in the treatment of angina pectoris.
Example: He's having a heart attack, give him some NITROGLYCERIN.

noun
an abnormal sensation, typically tingling or pricking (“pins and needles”), caused chiefly by pressure on or damage to peripheral nerves.
Example: Patients complain of painful PARESTHESIAE in the hands.

The presence of air or gas in the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall, causing collapse of the lung .
Example: PNEUMOTHORAX can occur spontaneously or as a result of trauma.

A non-invasive method for monitoring a patient’s o2 saturation .
Example: The PULSE OXYMETRY indicate that he's not breathing well.

Example: As the ambulance approaches the observer, the sound waves from the SIREN become compressed towards the observer.
